Interactions between economics and politics in Portugal

Objectives

        This project aims to provide answers to the following questions related to the interactions between economics and politics in Portugal:

- Do political forces play an important role in the allocation of grants from the central government to municipalities?
- Do local governments stimulate economic activity in election years in order to increase their probability of re-election?
- Does economic activity affect electoral results at the municipal level?
- What are the main determinants of the size of the Portuguese government during the second half of the 20th century?

Funding: 37 000 euros (ref. POCI/EGE/58 641/2004).

Timming: August 2005 to July 2008.
