The project will concentrate on two strands of research: 1. the phenomenon of the ideology of Global Jihad and its implications on Europe and on Muslim communities in Europe; 2. the networking, infrastructure and modus operandi of violent Islamist groups on European soil.

In the aftermath of 11 September attacks, European security officials have launched an extensive investigation on Islamist suspected terrorists in Europe. A number of European countries host radical Islamist leaders who act as producers of messages that feed the radical culture of Global Jihad. It is important to gather information that will supply us with a better understanding of the ideological, cultural, educational, and social factors of this phenomenon. Global Jihad refers to the affinities of a variety of movements of various sorts, which come together under a kind of ideological umbrella consisting of radical interpretations of Islam. This ideology has been nurtured by growing numbers of supporters and Islamist scholars and organizations in Muslim communities in the West.
